| Steps to Follow to Become a California Credentialed Teacher |
The process of acquiring a California teaching credential is quite complex. We have outlined some information and links to help guide prospective teachers through this process. This information is meant to serve as a guide, please check with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for more information and details. Multiple Subject Preliminary Teaching Credential:
1. Complete a baccalaureate or higher degree, except in professional education, from a regionally-accredited college or university.
2. Complete a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing-approved liberal arts subject matter Preparation Program as an undergraduate.
Take and pass the Multiple Subjects Assessment Test (MSAT). You must take and pass both the Content Knowledge and Content Area Exercises portions of the MSAT. The total cost for taking these two tests on the same day is $245.
4. Complete a multiple subject teacher preparation program including successful student teaching and obtain a formal recommendation for the credential by the California college or university where the program was completed. Examples of cost are $2000 for a CSU one-year credential program to $9000 for a UCLA two-year Credential and Masters program to $15,550 for Pepperdine's teaching credential program.
6. Complete a course in the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution, or pass an examination in this area administered by a regionally-accredited community college, college, or university. The cost of this exam is approximately $30.
Multiple Subject Professional Clear Teaching Credential:
To clear a preliminary credential, teachers must satisfy the above conditions, AND:
1. Enroll in a health education for teachers course (may or may not be part of teaching credential program.) The cost of this class through UCLA extension is $250.
2. Take a course in special education and advanced computer education. If these courses are not part of the teacher's formal preparation program, each course costs about $275 through UCLA extension.
