What Does Every Student Deserve?
Matthew Hakimi Responds

.

"Every student deserves freedom of speech, the right to ask questions from their teachers and the right to choose their teachers."

Every single person in society has their own rights. School is like a country where students are the people and the school board is the government. Students at school, as people in society, deserve to have many rights. Every student deserves freedom of speech, the right to ask questions in their classes and the right to choose their teachers.

Every student deserves to have freedom of speech. School must be for the students, of the students and by the students. As people in society have freedom of speech and their opinions about their society are taken by the government, students at school should be able to say what they think is good for their school and what is not. They should have their voices heard. They must be able to share their ideas about their school environment with the principal or their school dean at the meetings they have together. If there is a rule at school passed by the principal and it is not good for the students, they should have the right to ask their school principal to revise that rule. For instance, when I was in junior high, my school principal passed a rule by which there would be three important tests of all of the lessons we were studying every week. It did not include the tests and the quizzes given by the teachers. So it would be very hard for me and all other students to take a lot of tests every week. Therefore, some of my classmates and I went to our school principal to talk to him about the new rule at school. The result was positive and he agreed to deny that rule.

Every student should have the right to ask questions from their teachers. If students were not allowed to raise their hands and ask their teachers questions about the lesson they did not understand, they would never learn anything. There would always be questions in their minds without answers. Sometimes it happens that a teacher makes a mistake while teaching her or his students and some students correct it by their question. Teachers are not always right. Asking questions helps students learn better. In some countries such as Japan, students in most schools are not allowed to ask any questions from their teachers in class. It would be considered an impolite behavior if a student raised his or her hand for a question even if they did not understand what their teacher was teaching them. This method is completely wrong. Teachers cannot read students’ minds to see what part of the lesson students don't understand well or are confused about.

Every student also deserves the right to choose their teachers. Although in almost no high school or junior high do students have this right, there are some good reasons why students deserve the right to choose which teacher they would like to take a course with. Sometimes a teacher is not on good terms with a student for some reason and tries not to give them high grades. The student should be able to switch teachers by talking to his or her counselor. As people in society have the right to vote for their mayors, senators and presidents, so should the students for their teachers. If there is a bad teacher in a school or a teacher who can't communicate with their students, it is not the students' fault and they should not have to take any classes with that teacher. It is the school board's fault to have such a bad teacher. They have to have good teachers teaching the students.

Every student deserves freedom of speech, the right to ask questions from their teachers and the right to choose their teachers. As people in society are respected and their ideas taken by the government, so should students’ ideas at school be considered by their school principal. Students spend most of their time at school studying, talking with their friends and taking exams. Students actually live in school, so schools have got to be their society and students must have the rights in their school that people have in society.
