Students have the responsibility to respect the rights of all persons involved in the educational process. Every student deserves to have freedom of expression, fair treatment and equality in education and the right to private records and privacy.
Every student deserves to have freedom of expression. The major aspects of this right are clothing and speech. In every high school, students should have the right to choose their own dress, conduct, and personal appearance. Students shall have the right to wear buttons and other symbolic expressions provided these expressions are not obscene, or cause material disruption of the educational environment. I think public high schools should not have rules that do not to permit any students to wear hats. Maybe someone is sick and has to wear a hat or put something on his or her hair to be protected from the cold. If I wear a hat and someone tries to beat me up because of it, isn't there a bigger issue to deal with than hats? It's the school's responsibility to control the students that try to behave in a way that students don't feel like they are prisoners in jail.
Every student in high school has to have fair treatment and equality in education. All students are guaranteed the right to equal opportunity, despite of their color, race, religion, class, sex, or citizenship. It is not right for a student who comes from a foreign country to be educated in a different way than American students. No foreign student should be afraid to speak in a class or a club in which the other students are American. Also, teachers should answer their questions and it should not make a difference for them to answer questions from a lazy or a hard-working student. It happened to me when one time a teacher in class asked a question about the lessons we had studied, and I raised my hand. Although I was the first one who was ready to answer, the teacher permitted someone else who was American to answer. Everyone in class realized that that wasn't fair, but no one said anything to the teacher.
Every student deserves to have the right to private records and privacy. Student records contain information including test scores and health records, which are private and personal things that don't concern anyone else. It doesn't matter how the grades are. Students should not be constrained to show their grade reports to their parents and it's not the school's responsibility to check students' grades to see what is going on.
Every student deserves to have freedom of expression, fair and equal treatment in education and the right to privacy. The school's responsibility is just to help students become intelligent, freethinking adults, and really help them choose the best way to continue their future.
