The students at SMASH were asked the following questions:
Should there be computers at school?
What is the story of you and computers?
In reading their responses, you will see that they recognize the importance of having equal access to computers at school to level the playing field.

I think there should be computers at school because some kids do not have them at home. So, if there is an assignment that must be typed and there is no computer at school, the kid without their own computer will have a harder time.

- Hanna, Middle School

I can see myself using computers in the future, in fact I can see the whole nation using them. Technology today is so developed that people might stay at their computers and control everyday life from the click of the mouse. People will buy their groceries shop for clothes, control their businesses, and for students maybe even take their classes over the Internet basically like home schooling.
I think that there should be computers at school because a lot of people cannot access them at home, so if we didn’t have them at schools then students wouldn’t be able to type their school work and look up information for projects and reports.

- Casey, Middle School

I use computers every day whether it's for e-mail , playing games or just surfing the Web. I enjoy working with computers.
I think computers are very important and people have learned to rely on them for everything they do. They are a fast way to communicate with people all around the world and an easier way to organize and manage things.
There should be computers in school, because they help kids with typing and organization, but also keep kids updated with the technological world, which is growing so fast.

- Joe, Middle School

When I was in fist grade, my teacher would take the class to the computer lab and we got to play and make graphics on the computer. In third grade, I started using computers for word processing (writing stories). In sixth grade, I got e-mail. Now I use the computers for all these things, making greeting cards, checking e-mail, research and typing. I go on the computer about once a week.

- Desi, Middle School

At my mom’s house, I have one computer, which is not hooked up to the Internet. I have another computer at my dad’s. I don’t really use them that often, just to type homework and check my e-mail once a month. I learned to use a computer at about five years old. I was taught both by my dad and teachers. I learned to type properly at six, and I use this skill for homework. I am not a computer-junkie, I use them only for school and e-mail.

- Emily, Middle School

Computers and I don’t get along that well. I understand things on it but for some reason if something were to pop up, I’d be frantic. Computers are actually not too difficult if you know what you’re doing.

- Rita, Middle School
