Eric Kim, Age 14, Grade 9
I use computers daily for such things as word processing, games, research, web surfing, graphic designing, chatting, basically most of what you can do on a computer. Computers are an integral part of my daily routine. Before it used to be that if I wanted a phone number or movie listing I would look in the paper, but now I can just turn to my computer.
Samuel Levine, Age 15, Grade 9
Computers are a major part of my life, because of their amazing versatility. The hours that some spend on the phone can be moved to a simple online service, as well as those that would otherwise be spent driving, shopping, playing, studying, searching, or writing. Plus, on a computer, there are lots of flashing lights and colors. I, for one, spend those hours there.
Jack Ross, Age 15, Grade 9
I use America Online and use the Internet very often. The resources are great and exponential help for me and my studies. Web sites are a great pleasure and tool for working harder in school.
Michael Nyden, Age 16, Grade 11
At the birth of this new millennium, computers as well as the globally connected network we label the Internet, one cannot help but utilize the commodities and privileges computers award an individual, I am no different
I currently use computers for educational and entertainment purposes equally. This includes but is not limited to surfing the "Net", gaming online, and doing reports.
Andrew Whisnant, Age 17, Grade 11
I use computers to do basic programming in my C++ class and word processing. My main use for computers is the Internet. At home I have a DSL line and use it for research, email, and games. I also download music from Napster. I also have access to a digital video camera and I use editing programs on an iMac to make films.
Kim Tsao, Age 18, Grade 12
Homework for one of my classes is downloaded and submitted online, I keep track of my college applications online as well. (I submitted most of my college applications online.) I also use computers for research, gaming, chatting with friends, listening to music, designing and creating web pages, and typing up assignments.
Justin Lee, Age 18, Grade 12
I use it mostly as a tool for communication. That means I keep in touch with my friends from school, some other friends 200 miles away, or even my family that lives in another time zone. I also use it for minor things such as checking weather or for getting the latest score from a basketball game.
| :. How do you imagine you will use computers 10 years from now? |
Eric Kim, Age 14, Grade 9
I think my personal needs and usage will remain similar to my present one, but I figure that my occupation will somehow involve computers. For example, using LAD systems for architecture or for data analysis in the sciences, or any of a number of occupations. I figure that more and more fields will be integrated with the available technology at the time.
Jimmy Bromberg, Age 15, Grade 9
I imagine that Ill use computers both at home and at work. Hopefully, there will be portable computers that are pocket size so I can work on the road. Theyd be like a palm pilot but better. I imagine mostly everything will be done on a computer in ten years.
Lynna Jirpongopas, Age 15, Grade 9
Im not sure how I will use computers 10 years from now, I probably wont be using computers as much 10 years from now. Unless I end up working with computers.
Zara Szeftel, Age 15, Grade 9
I imagine that in 10 years computers will be used for almost everything. There will be a computer on every desk, in every classroom, in every school in America. They will be used for holding all kinds of records and organizing that is manual at this time.
Gillian Brunet, Age 14, Grade 9
I think we will use computers for the same things in general, but were going to be using them much more. Information will be updated faster-much faster. Laptops may be a required supply in high school-like having paper and pencils. Who can really say?
Cooper Moeschler, Age 15, Grade 9
I think that computers will be used for pretty much everything. Cooking will probably be done by typing in what you want and how much you want made. Pinkdot services will flourish. School will be webcast. Nothing will be manual, everything will be automated.
Charlotte Froom, Age 14, Grade 9
I think that they will be a lot smaller and portable and will have a lot more features like videophones. You will be able to store more music and the Internet will be infinitely faster.
Homayoun Simon, Age 16, Grade 11
Obviously computers will have even a greater role in the coming future. I believe that in 10 years people will be able to interact with computers, maybe even emotionally.
Corinne Bennett, Age 17, Grade 12
I imagine I will use computers a great deal more in the future to help me with everyday tasks. I could envision myself using computers all wired throughout my house to turn lights on and off and things of that sort. As well as accessing information from all corners of the world at all times.
Alexis Brovko, Age 17, Grade 12
I imagine that they will be used in the same way and then some. I think it will end up being a more common form of communication than the phone and that they will be used more often to control robots that will be doing many jobs.
Alex Nazarchuk, Age 17, Grade 12
In 10 years from now I imagine using quantum computers and bio-computers.
Jamie A. Gullick, Age 14, Grade 9
We will have better technology, so I have no clue. Most likely I will have to use some sort of computer for work, but I have no idea what I am going to do for a living.
| :. Because of the high cost of computers, many people across Los Angeles have limited access to the Internet. How would you make computers and the Internet more accessible to all people? |
Jimmy Bromberg, Age 15, Grade 9
My hope would be that both computers and the Internet could lower in price. Since that probably wont happen, I think the government should make computer libraries. If the computers have internet access, then people could come in and search the Web. If they left them open late, people who cant afford computers could come in after school or work.
Alana Mizrahi, Age 15, Grade 9
I think that libraries need to have more computers so that many people can be on the computer at the same time there. Also, they could start making computer cafes here so that people could have really easy access to computers.
Lynna Jirpongopas, Age 15, Grade 9
Because of the high cost of computers, many people dont have access to the Internet, like some of my friends. So I welcome my friends that dont have Internet access to do research, to use my computer at my home.
Sima Namira, Age 14, Grade 9
I feel that it is horrible that not everyone has the same chance to use the Internet. One can learn so much from it. What I would do is to put our taxes for a good cause rather than spending money on worthless things for our city like streetlights (that we already have.) I think that too much money we could be using on something needed by learning students is spent on other, less important, stuff.
Jessica Mkitarian, Age 14, Grade 9
To make the Internet more accessible to all people, I think there should be more computers with internet access in more places (like libraries, bookstores, and coffee shop.) It would also help if computers were cheaper.
Gillian Brunet, Age 14, Grade 9
Provide computers with internet access to everyone, everywhere. Put them in public places like shopping malls (and other places where these are scarce) absolutely free. You ask who will pay for this? Simple. Lots of big banks and corporations like to boast about how they help the community. They will provide if they get the credit. People everywhere will have internet access even in the inner cities. Its not a permanent solution and it wont completely solve the problem but its a start.
Daniel Fliegel, Age 14, Grade 9
The only way you can make it accessible to everyone is to make it free.
Cooper Moeschler, Age 15, Grade 9
If I was in the position to do so, I would make a Habitat for Humanity thing but with computers. Many Internet services are free so send those with the computers. Or we could make a computer library where people could sign up to use a computer or something like an internet café, but you wouldnt have to buy an ice blended or something to use the computers.
John Sonntag, Age 14, Grade 9
I think that Bill Gates should lower the price on all of his computers, because he is so rich, he can afford to make his computers cheaper.
Corinne Bennett, Age 17, Grade 12
I would make the Internet available to all people by making access free at local community sites such as the library, the mall and plazas. Our mall has a thing called a centerling that allows people to access the Internet at the mall at certain web stations, all paid for by lots of advertising on the web pages.
