Fern Avenue School, Torrance Unified
If you had more of a voice, what would you change in your school and community? Why do people choose to vote?
Teachers would get paid more. I would give books to the teachers so there kids would learn how to read. I would make the rooms bigger and get more desks and chairs. I would buy teachers math books and maps so the kids will improve and get better grades. I would do any thing so the kids can learn.
- Mea, Grade 4, Age 10

I would like to get rid of drugs and alcohol but I know there would be more shootouts and even more riots, so I guess I couldnÌt really do that. I would also want to get rid of pollution and child abuse but I can't be everywhere at the same time, so I guess I can't do that either. So you can't blame people that are in charge because it's a difficult job to change even a little city!
- James, Grade 4, Age 9

I would want our school clean. Also to pick up garbage. And also to learn better things. And for the teacher to have a better break.
- Jessica, Grade 2, Age 7

I would pay people to pick up all the trash in Torrance. Then they would not kill all of the sea animals and every one could live in Peace. I do not want a lot of trash in the world. I want it to be clean like other states and islands and maybe even countries.
- Clarence, Grade 4, Age 10

Put cross walks on every corner. So people can cross streets. Even on Carson Street. Keep the water clean in our earth. So you can drink water. And so animals can take a bath in the water. And can drink water. And not get sick by drinking it.
- Callie, Grade 2, Age 7

If I had more of a voice I would change the books that are torn in the libraries so the kids can read new books that aren't torn and ripped. I would fix the bathrooms in the school because there are sometimes flooded. And in the community I would stop the pollution in the sea and make more electric cars so people wonÌt pollute the air.
- Christina, Grade 4, Age 8

I would make sure that there would be no vouchers because they are taking money from the public schools, I mean hello! Pretty soon weÌre not going to have enough seats to sit in or books to read. Pretty soon were not going to have enough. money to keep the school open. We need some real help it seems like all are minds went to space. We NEED HELP.
- Kara, Grade 4, Age 9

I would make thinks fair and change things in our school community. I would change the bad words to good words. And I would not like teasing. I would not like fighting or complaining.
- Ariel, Grade 2, Age 7

I would change my school by having the teachers do PE with the class, not the PE teacher. I would also make classrooms bigger and have nice teachers only but not really strict teachers. I also would want to help people that have no money at all. I also would make it so you canÌt have guns in a house with children or sell guns or alcohol, cigarettes, or tobacco.
- Stacy, Grade 4, Age 9

I would give schools more money and improve the bathrooms. I would encourage people not to litter. I would get people to paint over graffiti and get gangs off the streets. Maybe put some parks where the places that are owned by the city and tear out the cement and put new asphalt. I would also improve the cafeteria.
- Matt, Grade 4, Age 10

People need to vote to know what is better for us. Like you vote for to not cut down trees are good. I vote to not liter. I vote to not waste papers. I vote to not yell in the church. I vote to not care about money. Give poor people money and donít care about money.
- Pamela, Grade 2, Age 7

I think people choose to vote because they need to elect a president so he takes care of our country and help schools have lots to teach. I also think they vote because some parents want their taxes to be low.
- Kimberly, Grade 4, Age 9

So people wonít get hurt. And so they will not get hungry and sick. And will be free. They will be very happy. To make a better land you will have to pick up trash. And recycle the paper.
-Tammy, Grade 2, Age 7

I think people vote for their right to be heard. If people vote for the laws and decisions this country makes they will probably feel safer with the circumstances and laws they live with. If people my age could vote I would because I believe you should be able to choose the person our laws that you would be following.
- Courtney, Grade 5, Age 10

They vote because they want things that are better. Also they vote because they want better water. They want better things for the word. We want better things. I want better water for the fishes.
- Erin, Grade 2, Age 7

If men and women vote we might have an upstanding presidents instead of an unspeakable president. If we donít care are nation will be engaged in battle. Then we will not have freedom anymore then we have to have a war. If we loose we will be under control. Then our life will be miserable.
- Eddie, Grade 4, Age 9

People choose to vote because sometimes they don't like the choices the government makes. Sometimes the people need new things.
- David, Grade 2, Age 7
