Several questions about democracy were posed to the students, including:

    1. What is a Democracy?
    2. Is your house a democracy?
    3. Why is it important to vote?
    4. What does it mean to be a good citizen?

Below are some of the responses.

Michael Cross, Jr.
A democracy is a form of government where the people have equal say in how their county is run. In my house, my father makes the rules. My family would never be considered a democracy, because my father is a dictator that dictates everything.

George Pelic
A democracy is a state of government where everybody has a say. I believe that in my house there is a democracy, because before any important event everyone is consulted and their opinion counts. To be a good citizen in a democratic county is to voice your opinion only on issues on which you have done a lot or at least some research. It is important to be educated in a democratic country, because your vote counts and if you are not smart enough to make a good vote, you are going against your country.

Jeremy Rosen-Prinz
A good citizen is someone who follows most of the laws, but at the same time doesn’t believe everything the government tells them. Because if you listen to the government all the time and believe everything, you are just a mindless pawn.

Makana Campbell
I think it is important for kids in a democratic society to be educated just like everyone else, because if they weren’t then how would they know what the candidates proposals mean and how would they know where to check on the voting ballot?!

Amber
I think it is important to vote. I mean it’s us that pick our presidents. Every single vote counts. It’s being part of the community, state and country. Every vote seems "Oh, it’s not a big difference. One vote won’t matter," but it does. It could make a president win. But if you don’t vote our country’s president cannot be very good. We have to make our vote count and by doing that....Vote for your president and be part of the world!

Samantha Crowther
It is important to vote. You need to get your voice heard on the issues you believe in and get what you want, not let others decide for you. People don’t vote for a variety of reasons, it could be because they don’t like choosing, they’re ignorant, lazy or they are trying to make a stand against government. It’s a personal decision.
To be a good citizen in a democratic society is to voice your opinion, uphold the current laws, and (if necessary) make new better laws to help our society. You have to be an active member in your community and always have equal rights.

Samantha Grace Acerno
I definitely think it’s important to vote. Because if you don’t vote, then we could get a really stupid president, someone that we don’t like. Your vote does count! Some people don’t vote because they are unsure who is better for the country or state. Like Howard Stern, he wants to vote for Gore, but he doesn’t like Lieberman, although he hates Bush. To be a good citizen in a democratic society means to participate or have a say in everything you can or to be helpful whenever needed.
